Sikhism

Sikhism is the fifth largest religion in the world with about 23 million followers. About 19 million Sikhs live in India, and many Sikhs can also be found in the United Kingdom, Canada, and the United States.
Sikhism was formed in India in the 16th century when there was conflict between the Hindus and the Muslims. For this reason, Sikhism was somewhat influenced by Hinduism and Islam. It was founded by Guru Nanak Dev. He used to preach that religion was a way to unite people, but instead it turned men on one another. Guru Nanak was especially bothered by the conflict between the Hindus and the Muslims. Guru Nanak told his followers to stop the cycle of reincarnation by living a disciplined life. By this he meant for his followers to live in a balanced worldly manner, moderate egoism, and accept ultimate reality. Sikhs do not believe in heaven or hell. Sikhs believe that god makes his will known through the gurus, rather than through incarnations.
Sikhs are easily spotted due to the fact that they wear turbans and the five k’s. The five k’s consist of Kes – keeping hair in its natural state, Kangha – the comb, Kara – the steel bracelet, Kachh – the soldier shorts, and Kirpan – the sword. Sikhs also pray and meditate regularly by repeating god’s name, usually with rosary beads. Sikhism emphasizes community, and the community revolves around the Sikh temple. The goal of a Sikh is to live a balanced life of work, worship, and charity.
